College & Career Planning

 
Sucessful career planning involves incorporating each student's unique qualities, abilities, and goals. A College or career "fit" is one that embraces all aspects of an individual's educational strengths and personality.  
 
Throughout Seneca Valley students' high school career, they will participate in career units during class, hear from career speakers, have the opportunity to meet with college as well as career and technical institution representatives, complete career-related assessments, and discuss issues individually or in groups with School Counselors. Additional material can be obtained through internet research, reference books, and the student's Naviance account. 
 
Seneca Valley's Coordinator of Collegiate and Career affairs, Mrs. Ramirez-Lightner, provides extensive resources related to college and career planning for students and families on the SHS guidance webpage. Some helpful links for 9th and 10th grade students are below:

SchooLinks is a modern, college and career readiness platform to prepare students for what comes after graduation. SchooLinks helps students discover their interests and strengths, explore colleges and careers, and create a personal graduation plan that best reflects their post-secondary goals. SchooLinks at Seneca Valley is accessible in 7th-12th grades by students and their parents.
 
The sixteen Career Clusters were developed to relate occupations to broad industries.  Within each cluster are several "Pathways," which provide a more focused category within the cluster.

College admission representatives visit with our Seneca Valley students during the fall semester. Students in 9th and 10th grade and able to meet wtih these representatives. 
 
Testing (SAT, ACT, AP, ASVAB)
Students may want to consider taking the PreAct, PSAT, and/or the ASVB during their Sophomore year. Information about these tests can be found at the link above.
 
Student athletes interested in playing sports at the collegiate level must register with and meet the requirements of the NCAA.
 
It's not too early to start thinking about scholarships! There are opportunities for 9th and 10th grade students to earn scholarships.
